Jig-Bee Flower Farm

Columbine Ballerina Pink

Perennial / Biennial

Description

Aquilegia vulgaris

These ruffled pale pink blooms resemble ballerina tutus. They are fully double blooms that measure about 1 and 1/2 inches. This perennial plant typically blooms in the second year.

These double columbine were in the landscape at one of my growing sites (a very generous neighbor let me grow flowers in part of her garden). This all pink/blush double is a rare, unusual variety. While I didn't plant this myself, you better believe I harvested the seeds to share them with you!

CAUTION: Parts of this plant are poisonous

Planting Instructions

SOWING:

Transplant: Transplant (recommended) - Sow 8-10 weeks before last frost. Transplant out after last frost.  Direct seed - Sow once soil has warmed to 65°F (18°C). Sow directly into gardenbed in groups of 3-4 seeds. Thin to one plant when true leaves appear. Winter mulching in cold climates, after the first frost is recommended to protect plants from heaving with the freeze and thaw cycles.

Germination Requirements: Refrigerate seed for 5 days prior to planting. Barely cover seed as light aids germination. Outdoors, soil temperature must be above 65°F.

Days to Germination: Germinates in 21-28 days at 70-75°F (21-24°C)

GROWING:

Light Preference: Part Shade. Will tolerate full sun where summers are cool and plants can be kept watered.

Soil Requirements: Prefers light shade and humus-rich, well-drained soil.

Plant Height:    24–26" inches

Plant Spacing: 9” cutflower production; 12-18” garden/landscabe

Hardiness Zones: Perennial USDA Zones 3-9

Pinching: No

Flower Support: Netting or support is helpful but may not be necessary

Days to Bloom: Blooms in spring of second year from the previous year's planting

HARVEST AND VASE LIFE:

Yield: Productive

Harvest Fresh:  When half of the florets on a stem are open. Brush or shake stems to remove petals from old flowers. New green seed pods provide attractive texture. Flowers will continue to open after harvest and shed petals

Expected Vase Life: 7-10 days

USES:

Cut Flower, Garden Beds, and Beneficial Insect Plantings
