Digitalis lutea

This 4-5 foot foxglove has narrow tubular lemon yellow to ivory florets. An unusual variety that bloom in the second year. This variety self sows and will naturalize if some stems are allowed to mature and set seeds.

    Planting Instructions

    SOWING:

    Transplant: Start foxglove seeds indoors 8 weeks before the last frost date. Sow on the surface of moist growing medium and gently press them into the surface.

    DIrect Seed from late spring through midsummer - scatter the seeds as evenly as possible over the moist growing medium and gently press them into the surface. Keep moist to aid germination. 

    Will self-sow when left to go to seed in the garden.

    Germination Requirements: Do not cover as light aids germination.

    Days to Germination: Germinates in 7-14 days at 68°F

    GROWING:

    Light Preference: Part Sun to Part Shade

    Soil Preference: Evenly moist, rich, organic soil. It tolerates some sun if soil is kept moist.

    Hardiness: Perennial Zones: 3-9

    Plant Height:    36-48 inches

    Plant Spacing: 9-12 inches for cut flower production, 12-18” garden/landscape

    Pinching: No

    Flower Support: Netting or support is helpful but may not be necessary

    Days to Bloom: Blooms in spring of second year from the previous year's planting

    HARVEST AND VASE LIFE:

    Yield: 1-2 stems in second year

    Harvest Fresh: Harvest when ⅓ to ½ of the flowers have opened. Flowers will continue to open after harvest so can be harvested earlier when 2-3 flowers are beginning to open

    Expected Vase Life: 7 days

    Cut Flower, Beneficial Insect Plantings, Deer resistant, drought tolerant
