Jig-Bee Flower Farm

Monarda Lambada

Hardy Annual

Description

Monarda lambada

Also known as lemon mint - this year's crop was vibrating in color like nothing I've ever seen. I don't know if it was the drought or the mild summers of Vermont but I do know monarda lambada grows really well in the Northeast. It had a super long harvest window of five to six weeks.

This is a hardy annual and for warmer climates Zone 6 or higher), it can be fall planted and overwintered for spring blooms. Here in 5a, I planted it in mid May though I could have planted it earlier.

Monarda Lambada is fragrant and edible. I love its Dr. Seuss like form.

Harvest Fresh: Harvest once the first few blooms begin to turn pink and beyond. Harvest the central stem, just above the lowest two to three side shoots. Flowers will continue to open after cutting.

As stems age, the florets turn brown and unattractive - these can be shaken or pulled off but is time consuming. Better to harvest frequently when in production to minimize additional processing.
