Rudbeckia hirta

Give your garden and floral designs a glow up with these quilled rudbeckia that come in a mix of gold, copper and red shades. These rudbeckia are tall (over 3 feet for me) and produce several stems per plant.  This variety also has a stronger stem and seems less prone to wilting compared to other rudbeckia varieties.  This is a cool-season hardy annual that may be a short-lived perennial in some climates.

    Planting Instructions

    SOWING:

    Transplant: (recommended) - Sow 6-8 weeks before planting out. Direct seed - Cast seeds directly in the garden.

    Germination Requirements: Do not cover seeds as light aids in germination

    Days to Germination: Germinates in 7-14 days at at 68-72°F (20-22°C) 

    GROWING:

    Light Preference: Sun to part shade

    Soil requirements: Average, well-drained soil. Tolerates poor soil. Heat and drought tolerant once established

    Plant Height:   24-36”  inches

    Plant Spacing:  6” for cut flowers 9-12” garden/landscape.

    Hardiness: Best grown as an annual. Winter hardy to zone 5 as an annual. Zones 9-10 for as a perennial.

    Pinching: None

    Flower Support: Yes, recommended

    Days to Bloom: 100-120 days

    HARVEST AND VASE LIFE:

    Yield: 3-5+ stems per plant

    Harvest Fresh:  Make harvest cuts for stem length least 18-24’ long.  Use the wiggle test to determine if it’s ready to harvest - stems should stiff near the bloom head. The bloom head should not flop around when the stem is wiggled.  

    Expected Vase Life: 7-10 days

    Harvest Dry: Cones can be harvested for drying.
